Movies can often give us unexpected life lessons . Here are some lessons that we can learn about food and life from the movie Ratatouille.

 

“Anyone can cook, but only the fearless can be great.”

Chef Gusteau says this in the first few minutes of the movie. This is really important advice for all the aspiring chefs and passionate cooks out there (including me). If you aren’t brave enough to take a risk you won’t create anything new, this applies to all aspects of life but is particularly important in cooking. Perfecting recipes from other chefs is good, but if you truly want to become like them you must try to experiment with different things and create something that is entirely your own.

 

“Food always comes to those who love to cook.”

This quote is pretty much self-explanatory, but if you look deeper I think what Chef Gusteau means, is that someone who loves to cook can always find a way to make even the most disgusting of foods into something extraordinarily delicious.

 

“Good food is like music you can taste, color you can smell.”

At first glance this may not make much sense, how can food be like music or colors? But just like good music can bring back memories and touch our hearts so to can good food. Good food can be as vibrant as the color of the sun and as soulful as music.

 

“Always do something unexpected.”

Do the unexpected. This advice is valuable not only in the kitchen but in life as well. Just like experimenting and playing around with food can lead to a delicious and mind blowing meal, taking risks and doing something unexpected can lead to success in other parts of life as well.

 

“Not everyone can become a great artist; but a great artist can come from anywhere”

This is probably the whole message of Ratatouille. Remy may be a rat, but he is a brilliant chef. Something that no one expect Linguini is willing to accept. Greatness can come from the most unexpected source. Most of the people who have changed our lives, scientists like Einstein or entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg have the most humble origins.
